Once you have downloaded the FirstWave NMIS Suite OVA from our website you can proceed to import the image onto your Proxmox Virtual Environment hypervisor.
Open a web browser and point it to your Proxmox VE instance graphical user interface. By default this is http://IP_ADDRESS_OF_PROXMOX_HYPERVISOR:8006.
Local directory has the correct content permissions
You need to ensure that the local directory/storage has the correct content permissions before proceeding with uploading/deploying the OVA.
Click on Datacenter in the left-hand panel, then Storage in the centre:
Click on the ‘local’ line then the Edit button above it:
In the Content dropdown, ensure that ‘Import’ is selected. You should also ensure that ‘Disk image’ is also selected, if not already:
Click OK.
Upload the OVA
Once this is done, click on the ‘local (servername)’ storage item on the left-hand panel, then click on Import, then the Upload button on the top next to ‘Download from URL’.
A window will appear, in this screen click on the Select File button and locate the OVA downloaded locally. Then click on Upload.
Be patient - this may take some time.
Once this is done a pop-up task viewer will be displayed. Wait until you see the following lines:
finished file import successfully
TASK OK
In the output, then close this.
Now that the OVA has been imported into your Proxmox VE environment, we can create a virtual machine out of it.
Staying on the Import screen, click on the OVA once to highlight it, then click on Import:
CPU Type change
FirstWave virtual machines from July 2024 onwards include MongoDB 6.0 and newer, which require a setting to be changed on the virtual machine before starting it for the first time. This is specific to Proxmox.
When on the import screen, make sure to change the CPU Type dropdown to ‘host’.
Click Import once the above step is complete.
NOTE: If you forget to do this at the Import screen, you can always do it before powering on the virtual machine. Click on the Virtual Machine, then Hardware. On the right-hand side select Processors from the list, then click Edit.
On the Edit pop up, select the dropdown next to Type and choose ‘host’, then press OK.
It is important this step is completed prior to first start up, otherwise you will observe that NMIS and its modules will not start correctly.
Once the virtual machine creation process has completed, it will be present on the left-hand panel.
Either right click on the virtual machine and then click "Start".
Or you can click on the virtual machine in the panel and then the "Start” button on the top right.
Once powered on, use our provided credentials to login. You can find this in the Install instructions on our website.
Tip: Once authenticated, our appliance ships with a Message of the Day (MOTD) which will provide you with the virtual machine's IP address, used to access the NMIS Suite Graphical User Interface (GUI). You can also find this by typing "ip a" into the console of the virtual machine.
Login prompt not displaying password on first boot
If you find that the virtual machine is not prompting for a password after providing the username on first boot, restart the virtual machine and it should then prompt for both credentials.
